A few days ago I was able to participate in the webinar: The New Green Kitchen: Top 10 Tips For Giving Your Cooking A “Greenover” . All I can say is Wow! Jackie Newgent, RD gave us her three rules for green cooking

  • Prepare more plant-based meals for your family
  • Be an energy-wise and planet-wise cook
  • Try to eat by season

I don’t consider myself green or a foodie for that matter and these three rules really resonated with me. I’m glad that our family is making a conscious effort in eating more of what is in season. Right now, we are enjoying lots of asparagus, spinach,  blueberries, pineapples and strawberries. Now, I’m trying to learn more about green cooking techniques so that we can conserve energy as well. Sometimes we think that since we are frugal we can not go green or eat healthier… I invite you to visit your local farmers market; you might be surprised of how inexpensive can be to eat veggies and fruits in season.

The top 5 tips that I can see our family moving towards putting our grain of sand to help the environment are:

  1. Select smart skillets.
Not all non-stick skillets are created equal. Look for PFOA-free and recycled aluminum pans. You can even use metal utencils with these.
  2. Practice Eco-cooking techniques like lid-cooking.
This technique is just right to cook the perfect hard boiled eggs as well as pasta.
  3. Love your small appliances.
These use less energy. Also, use a smart strip instead of leaving them
  4. Serve earth-style meals.
Try to minimize the use of a lot of dishes. Also, use every edible produce part.
  5. Enjoy ecotarian cuisine.
Be friends with your local farmer market. A great resource is Local Harvest website.

So, rest assured that I’ll be sharing how my family is making small changes to go green in the kitchen with you on Cuponeando Live on Mom TV :)

Disclaimer: By participating in this webinar I recieved the Big Green Cookbook and a Scanpan fry pan. This is my honest opinion and desire to be more green in the kitchen.
